Basel-City is paying people to ditch their cars.
The canton’s new “environmental bonus” scheme offers residents CHF 1,500 worth of credit for public transport, car-sharing or a shiny new bike - if they permanently give up their private vehicle.
The programme, funded with CHF 700,000 from Basel’s transport fund, will run for two years and cover around 400 bonuses.
Applicants must be between 18 and 80, have owned their car for at least a year, and promise to stay car-free for three years.
