Switzerland will hold a national day of mourning today for the victims of the fire at the Constellation bar in Crans-Montana.

An official memorial service will take place in Martigny attended by President Guy Parmelin, senior ministers and international representatives from thirty-seven countries.

Across the country, at 2pm, church bells will ring, a minute’s silence will be observed, and public transport will pause in tribute.

Schools and universities will pause lessons – even those taking exams will be given time to pay their respect. 

Flags will be flown at half mast and in Geneva the Jet d’Eau will be lit in red and white – the colours of the Valaisian flag.
