CERN bids for Tour de France

CERN is bidding to host a stage of the Tour de France in July 2029, with the candidacy due to be signed today at its Science Gateway in Meyrin.

The proposal would send the race along a cross-border route through several communes of the Pays de Gex and the city of Meyrin.

The signing brings together the head of CERN with several political leaders from each side of the border. 

The year carries particular weight for the laboratory, which in 2029 will mark both its 75th anniversary and the 40 years since the invention of the World Wide Web. 

For Greater Geneva residents, a successful bid would put one of cycling's biggest events on local roads in three years' time.
