How much does it cost to change a light bulb? In the City of Geneva, almost CHF 7m.
The city wants to change all fluorescent lights in public buildings – and switch them for LEDs.
The two main reasons are cost and environmental. Florescent lights contain mercury – such lights have been banned in Switzerland since the beginning of the year.
Changing them to LEDs will cut power use by around half.
That will be the equivalent of 830 homes in Geneva and cut carbon emissions by 415 tonnes.
