The CO2 law that failed at the ballot box last weekend will have to be re-run. That’s according to the Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga.
Speaking to the SonntagsBlick. She says she was disappointed at the result and says the law was ‘overloaded’.
She says the moves have to be taken step by step. The government is determined to meet its obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement which says greenhouse emissions have to be halved by 2030.
The Swiss People’s Party, the only party to have opposed the law, says any replacement has to cost less and not impose any new taxes. The previous version used tax policy to encourage change.
Climate activists Extinction Rebellion are due to send a letter to the government saying if measures to cut emissions are not taken immediately, they’re morally obliged to bring cities to a standstill.
