Cold, snow and avalanches hit the country

Cold weather is enveloping the country at the moment – and winter sports fans are delighted at the fresh dump of snow – between 10 and 15 cm in the mountains.

It was the coldest night of the year in some places. At La Brévine – temperatures dropped to minus 18.4 degrees.

At Kloten airport in Zurich, overnight temperatures dropped to minus 8.5.

The heavy snow has triggered warnings in many areas. A man died in San Bernadino in Graubünden after being carried away by an avalanche with his son. His son managed to climb out – but the father was buried. He was airlifted to hospital where he died later.
