Switzerland will be applying to have yodelling protected as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The Federal Office of Culture says yodelling is a characteristically Swiss practice and it needs to be protected to ensure it for the next generation.
The office says it is already doing much to make sure the skills aren’t lost. Yodelling competitions are supported and young singers are encouraged to learn and develop.
The formal application is expected to be made next year – in the meantime other Swiss events have already been given the honour, such as the Basel Fasnacht.
