Due to the energy crises there’s a growing movement in the country to lift the ban on building new nuclear power stations.
Back in 2017 the people voted to move towards renewable electricity generation and phase out atomic plants.
But a group of centrists and right-wing political parties and business leaders are preparing an initiative to overturn the ban, triggering a strong reaction from opponents.
They point out there are still plenty of options for green energy and nuclear is not a short-term solution as it will take at least 15 years to build a new nuclear power station.
Jacqueline de Quattro, a Vaudois Liberal MP, says the current strategy is beginning to bear fruit with the growth of renewables.
A recent poll suggests 39% are in favour of new nuclear power stations while 29% are against.
