Electric bikes will soon dominate cycle lanes in Geneva – and while the rise of the green transport option is to be welcomed, there could be tensions with those using regular bikes.
Currently 43% of bikes are powered according to the canton – and that’s expected to rise.
The mix of bikes on the cycle lanes could create conflict, according to the pro bike lobby group Actif-trafiC.
The group’s co-secretary, Thibault Schneeberger, says there has to be a way normal cyclist and then those on different powered e-bikes, which are capable of top speeds between 25 and 45 kph, can share the same space safely.
The canton and lobby groups agree the answer maybe wider cycle lanes with different lanes to cater for the varying speeds.
