We’re in the grip of a national egg shortage.
There are reports of empty supermarket shelves across the country.
Retailer Migros says egg demand has been rising steadily for the last two years and production is unable to keep up with demand.
It’s normal egg demand rises after holiday periods as many people see eggs as a cheap healthy food.
It’s also thought demand will stay high this month as it’s ‘Veganuary’ – we’re urged to try a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle – although eggs aren’t vegan, obviously, but they could be seen as a good alternative to meat.
Veganuary is being pushed by many retailers.
