Energy use needs to be cut further

Genevans need to do more to save energy.

That’s the message from the cantonal energy task force after a study by the University of Geneva showed that the use of gas is down 6% and electricity down only by 3%.

The canton says we need to cut energy use by at least 15%.

That target was actually met easily, as gas consumption overall is down 39%. But the study shows that’s due to the Indian summer – and not a specific attempt to cut use by consumers.

State Councillor Antonio Hodgers says he’s pleased with the modest cuts, but now the weather is colder – everything is to play for. He says if you’re cold, put on a sweater.

The university study is ongoing and will report again in two weeks. The team says it is able to distinguish between home energy use and that by companies.
