Euro court rules against Switzerland

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled against Switzerland in a case involving pensions for widowers.

Current rules mean a widower loses pension rights when the last child reaches adulthood. The same is not true for widows.

This is because the law doesn’t consider widows to be the main breadwinner.

The case was taken to the court in Strasbourg by a widower who complained of unequal treatment.

The court ruled the government could not rely on the assumption the husband was the main earner in the family and it perpetuated stereotypes.
