Eye warning for eclipse watchers

Anyone who watched Wednesday's solar eclipse without proper glasses should watch for signs of retinal damage, doctors are warning

The Federal Office of Public Health says even at 99% coverage the sun can burn the macula in seconds — and because the retina has no pain receptors, the damage is often noticed only days later.

Warning signs include blurred vision, a dark spot in the centre of view, distorted lines, altered colour perception and heightened light sensitivity.

Bern eye specialist Martin Zinkernagel says mild cases often recover within six months, but permanent vision loss is possible in severe exposures.

Anyone with symptoms should see an ophthalmologist without delay — there is no proven treatment to restore damaged retinal cells.
