Swiss authorities are worried there could be a new wave of infections this winter, made up of the new highly infectious Delta variant.
Urs Karrer, vice-president of the Federal Scientific Task Force, says they’re setting a new target of having 80% of the population vaccinated, instead of 60%.
He says the Delta strain is 50% more transmissible than previous strains and more than half of non-vaccinated people could be infected by the winter.
Vaccines do protect against Delta. The Federal Health Office will start to target specific groups to boost vaccination rates, especially young women who mistakenly believe the vaccines cause infertility.
The World Health Organisation says the strain is now in 85 countries.
