France is bringing back border controls.
It says the aim is to counter terrorist threats and illegal migration.
The Schengen passport free zone agreement does allow countries to bring back border controls for a limited time in the case of national security.
France says the controls will start on Friday and go on until the end of April next year.
Authorities do say that includes Switzerland.
