Fuel reserves now in use

Switzerland is dipping into its emergency fuel reserves for the first time this year to keep petrol and diesel flowing

The Federal Office for National Economic Supply has authorised the release of 60,000 cubic metres of fuel between today and 20 September.

The move follows a technical breakdown at Cressier in Neuchâtel, the country's only refinery, which normally covers about a third of Swiss demand.

Low water levels on the Rhine have further restricted deliveries.

Supply remains fine according to officials and production at Cressier should return to normal from mid-September.
