Swiss Federal Railways say the Gotthard Base Tunnel will fully reopen on the 2nd September.
That’s just over a year after a damaged axel destroyed around 10km of track in the tunnel.
Test trains will run during August to check all the systems.
At a press conference, the SBB says working conditions in the tunnel have been difficult with limited space and high temperatures.
It says it would like to work with all European train operators to try to develop a system which detects hairline cracks in the wheels, which is thought to be the cause of the accident. A formal report has not yet been released.
