Following the rejection of large scale autoroute widening by voters, the government says it’s open to the idea of using more emergency lanes to alleviate bottle necks at peak times.
The Federal Council is to back an idea put forward by the Swiss people’s Party to simplify the procedure to allow more use of the shoulder.
It’s far cheaper than building new lanes and requires no more space.
The government says the use of the shoulder on the A1 between Morges East and Ecublens has improved traffic flow considerably – and reduced accidents.
