The federal government looks set to ban international adoptions as it says the risk of abuse is too great.
The Justice Minister, Beat Jans, says the danger of abuse around international adoptions concerns him greatly. He adds there have been ‘large scale irregularities’ in the past.
There are around 30 international adoptions a year at the moment, but there has been as many as 100 in previous years.
The Justice Department is set to update the rules next year, but there may be some exceptions for intra-family adoptions.
