The government is asking parliament to vote on a new tax law - one that will mean people will be taxed individually – even married couples.
The main aim is to remove the much criticised penalization of marriage. Under the current system the salaries of both are lumped together - normally meaning a higher tax bill.
The second advantage means it will make it more worthwhile for a non-working spouse – which is normally the woman – to return to the workforce.
The Federal Council is responding to a popular initiative launched by the Liberal Party to end the marriage discrepancy.
It recommends rejecting the initiative and accepting the new proposal as it will achieve the same aims, but quicker.
The move will lower the tax take by a billion francs.
