At a press conference yesterday in Bern, the Federal Health Office says 28% of the population have now been vaccinated and the reproduction rate is falling, now at 0.84 - deaths are also down.
But the head of the Infection Control Department, Virginie Masserey, says they are following the emergence of worrying variants carefully.
Martin Ackermann from the Scientific Task Force, says the good news is that even during the easing of the restrictions – cases are still going down.
He says the success of the vaccine roll out is clear as infections are now mainly affecting those unvaccinated. The Health Office says the vaccine should provide protection for at least 6 months. They’re now examining what the policy should be for booster shots.
Vaccines continue to be delivered. A new batch of 750,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine has arrived as well as 120,000 of Pfizer.
Masserey says the vaccination programme is now running like clockwork and most cantons have now opened up to everyone over the age of 16.
She says there is enough vaccine to allow children to start to be jabbed – once the regulator allows it.
