The motoring organisation, the TCS is warning of very heavy traffic over the next few days as the summer holiday season starts to get underway.
The TCS says there are likely to be more people taking to the roads due to strikes in France and Italy – and the Vorarlberg Tunnel in Austria is closed – that will mean more cars using the Gotthard and San Bernadino routes.
There are already large lines to enter the Gotthard as many head south. The recommendation is to use the tunnel mid-week, and then either early in the morning or late at night.
The traffic will likely to be particularly bad as people return in about three weeks from now.
The TCS also says that it will take longer for breakdown assistance to arrive if you need it. It suggests getting your car checked before leaving - especially tyres and batteries.
