The French nuclear inspectorate has issued a damning report on the Bugey power plant – which is only 70 km away from Geneva.
It says its four 900 megawatt reactors are degraded and vulnerable to breakdown and failure.
The report also adds there are procedural problems on testing and maintenance – and issues on getting spare parts.
Switzerland has long been fighting with the French on extending operations at the aging plant.
