Canton Geneva can continue to cull the deer population in the Versoix woods.
Yesterday, federal judges lifted a suspension order imposed by a cantonal court. The Animal Equity Association is fighting the decision to reduce the number of deer – saying the canton should use contraception methods instead.
But with the federal go ahead, cantonal gamekeepers will resume the operation. The aim is to kill 40 deer before the end of the month.
The animals are being blamed for crop damage and eating oak samplings.
It’s not the end of the legal battle – cantonal courts still haven’t ruled on the main issue of shooting versus contraception.
