Major political party backs new EU agreement

The Swiss Radical-Liberal Party has come out in favour of the new package of agreements between Switzerland and the European Union.

At a delegates’ meeting in Bern, 330 voted to back the deal, 104 opposed it, and nine abstained.

Supporters said the accords are a strategic necessity to safeguard access to the EU market and ensure Switzerland’s economic strength.

Opponents warned the treaties would expand bureaucracy and weaken parliament and popular rights.

Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis argued the package preserves Swiss sovereignty and keeps direct democracy intact.
