A man accused of starting a major fire because he was using a blow torch to kill weeds has been acquitted by a court in Bülach in canton Zurich.
In July last year the 36-year-old caretaker decided to kill weeds in a carpark by burning them.
Around the same time fire broke out nearby which destroyed two cars, two e-bikes and badly damaged two other cars. The total cost of the damage was CHF 260,000.-
His defence argued the fire was at least 10 meters away from where the man was working and he couldn’t be the cause.
Judges agreed there was insufficient evidence to convict.
