Man given 4 years for stealing police machine gun

A man has been convicted of stealing two machine guns from an unmarked police car in Geneva and then shooting up a café in the centre of the city in March last year.

The 21-year-old stayed silent in court, refusing to answer many questions – including the whereabouts of the second weapon.

The court heard how the man came across an unsecured police car with the two SIG MXP semi-automatic machine guns on the back seat. The weapons are designed to be used in highly exceptional circumstances – they have never been fired on the street by the police.

The missing second gun is thought to have been used in the audacious escape of the drug trafficker Mohammed Amra in May last year.

The man has been sentenced to four years in jail and he will be deported back to his native Turkey at the end of his term.
