A man has turned to the media after being scammed into buying a “junk bed” and losing CHF 40’000.
The 69-year-old retired truck driver and Bern resident told the Blick newslpaper that his issues started in 2017 when he received a sales call from a bed retailer. Several days later, the company turned up with a bed. When he said he didn’t want it, he said he was shouted and cursed at. Eventually he gave in. The price tag on the bed was CHF 20’000.
The bed, which has an electric bed frame, appeared cheaply made and didn’t work, but he had no receipt and therefore no warranty. He was then convinced by the company to pay another CHF 20’000 for an upgrade to a nursing home bed, which he was told would be re-imbursed by his health insurance. But that second bed was never delivered and he was never re-imbursed.
He advises that others call the police immediately if they suspect a similar scam.
