Switzerland is running out of bikes.
The pandemic means more people have been cycling – and so are deciding to buy a new bike.
But the problem is very few bikes are actually made in the country anymore – they all come from Asia – mainly China.
The head of the cyclist group Velosuisse, Peter Platter, says demand for bikes has skyrocketed everywhere and the costs of container transport from Asia is now ten times more expensive. All because of Covid.
But Platter points out – there are still two bicycle makers in Switzerland, Tour de Suisse in canton Thurgau and Komenda in Sankt Gallen.
