Figures from the army show nearly 100 weapons go missing every year.
Last year there were 96 weapons unaccounted for – that includes 82 assault rifles. The others were handguns.
In the vast majority of cases the owners have reported them as stolen.
But around 20 a year are found. Normally by tenants moving into a new home.
On average every year, one is destroyed in a house fire.
The army says it’s working on better training to cut back on the number of guns going missing.
