New covid variant being monitored

A new coronavirus variant is being closely monitored.

The BA.3.2 strain, nicknamed “Cicada,” has been detected in wastewater and is spreading internationally, according to the World Health Organization.

First identified in South Africa, it is now present in more than 20 countries.

Experts say the variant carries an unusually high number of mutations, raising concerns it could partially evade existing immunity.

But the Federal Office of Public Health stresses there is no evidence it causes more severe illness.

In Switzerland, overall infection levels remain low, though Cicada is becoming more prevalent in several regions.

Doctors continue to advise vaccination, hand washing, and staying home when sick.
