The Geneva Grand Council has voted unanimously to adopt a motion to crack down on domestic violence.
The motion was put forward by the Social Affairs Committee. It calls on the canton to pursue an ambitious strategy to end violence in the home. It releases money to create a prevention campaign and pulls together several state agencies to coordinate remedial action.
Many claim the problem is on the rise in Geneva – but the reality is, the canton doesn’t keep accurate numbers and some types of gender and sexual violence are not recorded.
But in Geneva, 81% of victims of domestic violence who have been taken away from the home are women.
