French authorities have confirmed long running speculation – the section of the A40 autoroute running from Annemasse to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois will be tolled from 2029.
That section has been free to road users since 1987, but expected maintenance costs of EUR 300m has been deemed unsustainable without tolls.
Many are worried the traffic will be pushed to the smaller roads – but there are plans to bring in carpooling lanes.
To counter the new tolls, some other fees on the A40 will be dropped.
The toll will come in February 1st 2029.
