After more than two decades of planning, the long-awaited Evouettes bypass tunnel in canton Valais was unveiled to the public on Saturday.
The 657-meter main tunnel, near Le Bouveret, is the centrepiece of a project designed to divert 18,000 vehicles a day away from the village and improve residents’ quality of life.
Construction began in 2017 but faced geological and financial challenges, including a 2021 interruption due to ground settlement.
Costing CHF 134m, the tunnel officially opens to traffic later this week.
