Palestinian rally turns violent

What began as a peaceful pro-Palestinian rally in Geneva last night ended in violent clashes at Cornavin station.

More than a thousand people had gathered at Bel-Air, calling for Swiss sanctions against Israel and a humanitarian corridor to Gaza.

But later, around 9:30 p.m., tensions erupted when several hundred protesters tried to force their way into the station.

Police quickly sealed off the area as fireworks and projectiles were thrown.

Tear gas filled the air, scattering the crowd and prompting shops to lock their doors.

The confrontation lasted nearly half an hour before calm returned. The demonstration dispersed around 10pm.
