Police criticised after G7 protests

Aftermath of G7 protests (c) Paul Sobon

Political fallout continues from Sunday's anti-G7 protests in Geneva.

Left-wing parties have accused police of using disproportionate tactics after around 250 people were held for identity checks following unrest and vandalism at the end of the demonstration.

Some detainees say they were kept for hours without access to water or toilets and included bystanders, tourists and families.

Police had warned repeatedly that the gathering was no longer authorised and that those remaining would face checks.

The Socialist Party says those responsible for violence should be prosecuted, but argues civil liberties must also be respected.
