The number of people living in Switzerland has risen to a record 9.05 million – a rise of 1% - despite a fall in immigration.
The figures from the Federal Statistics Office show all cantons have more people living in them, the highest was Schaffhausen with a nearly 2% rise.
But there aren’t that many babies – there were 78,000 live births last year, 2,000 less than the year before.
The population increase may give a boost to the Swiss People’s Party ‘No to 10 million’ campaign, which demands the government take strong action to keep the population under that number.
But the government statisticians have said in the past, the population will start to fall naturally before it gets that high.
