The Geneva Socialist Party has sent a proposal to the cantonal Grand Council with the aim to set up a fund to finance local media.
The initial amount would be CHF 10m. The money would be used to either create new media or to help existing titles. The content would have to be at least 75% editorial and based in Geneva.
The party says local media is essential to inform the public and ensure the proper functioning of a direct democracy. It says it believes there is an imminent threat to media at the moment.
