Push for Geneva to host song contest

Pressure is building to get canton Geneva to officially back the hosting of next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Four members of the Liberal party have signed a motion to get the Grand Council to do everything possible to secure the competition in 2025.  

The backers say Geneva is in unique position. It’s proven that it can hold large events, Palexpo is perfect as it can handle 15,000 spectators and 2,000 journalists and the European Broadcasting Union is based in the city. 

And there are enough hotels to cope. 

It’s estimated the event would bring in CHF 40m for the canton.

Geneva’s position may be helped by Lausanne officially pulling out. The mayor, Grégoire Junod, says the city lacks the infrastructure. It leaves Geneva as the only viable option in the French speaking region.
