The level of the Rhone River leaving Lake Geneva is dropping. Muddy banks are appearing and pontoons are being left stranded.
It’s all part of a plan.
The river is being drained by the opening of the downstream dams. It’s to clear sediment that’s been built up behind the dams for the last few years. The last time it was cleared was in 2016.
All swimming or boating is currently forbidden as the rate of flow of the river will start to increase dramatically as it’s lowered.
There is one effect anyone can detect if nearby – it’s beginning to smell a bit.
The river will be back to normal by the 5th June.
