The head of Swiss Federal Railways says he’s certain the right balance can be struck that ensures the railways and helps save money.
Vincent Ducrot, talking to RTS television, says technology will change a lot over the next 20 or 30 years.
In relation to the government’s plans to close smaller underused stations – he says development will mean small autonomous vehicles will be able to take passengers to stations instead.
He also backed the removal of subsidies for night trains – saying they are a niche market.
But he does point out that every 15 years, the trains need 20% more seats and the market shows no sign of slowing.
