Should tax payers get a rebate?

There are calls for tax payers to get a rebate after most cantons have reported a tax surplus this year.

Geneva heads the list with over half a billion francs extra, but Zug and Lucerne have an extra CHF 300m, and Zurich and Aargau with surpluses around CHF 150m.

The think tank, Avenir Suisse, says cantons should give the money back to the people in a form of a rebate, but they advise against tax cuts because next year may be different. 

But the Conference of Cantonal Governments urge caution. It says this is a snap shot and costs are rising and many are in debt. 

But not all cantons are sitting pretty on a cash pile. 

Vaud is in the red by CHF 369m, Ticino by CHF 72m and Sankt Gallen by CHF 243m.
