A sixth wave of covid is sweeping across the country – new Omicron variants are to blame, which are more infectious than the previous BA1 and BA2. We’re now up to BA5.
The latest government numbers show there are 5,000 new infections a day – up 34% on the previous week. But Geneva numbers show infections are up 53% week on week.
But despite the numbers, the health system is coping well. While there are more admissions, it’s way below the number which would trigger an alert.
There are 850 in hospital with Covid throughout the country – out of a total of 22,000 beds.
Around 50 a week are admitted to intensive care with covid – but that’s far below the alert level which is 300.
There are hopes the wave maybe peaking. When compared to other countries, Switzerland is behind the curve. Leading is Portugal, which is now showing a decline.
