Spring has sprung - possibly

After weeks of heavy snowfall, we’re now seeing a sudden surge of spring warmth.

Meteorologist Klaus Marquardt told the Blick newspaper the mild air is flowing in from North Africa, sometimes carrying Saharan dust.

Temperatures are climbing to 15 degrees on the northern side of the Alps, and close to 20 in Ticino, which is well above seasonal norms.

The freezing level is rising sharply, accelerating snowmelt and increasing avalanche danger.

For skiers, the recommendation is enjoy the snow while it lasts.

Forecasters say this could well be the start of spring - but it may be a little cooler this weekend.
