Switzerland’s transition to DAB radio is hitting some significant hurdles.
In December last year all FM transmitters run by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation were switched off – the aim was to give DAB a boost. But ratings show they lost half a million listeners.
There are now calls the restore FM – but many transmitter sites have been dismantled, and legally – the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation doesn’t have an FM licence.
The law will need to be changed and it’s estimated t will cost millions to rebuild the network.
It’s been suggested it will be cheaper to hand out free DAB radios to those to have not made the switch.
