Students across Switzerland took to the streets yesterday to protest education cuts.
In Lausanne, around 150 people demonstrated on the University of Lausanne campus, opposing savings of CHF 20m in the canton’s 2026 budget.
That amounts to a 7% cut, which student associations warn will weaken research, harm teaching quality, and damage the university’s reputation.
In Zurich, nearly 700 students and researchers marched in the city centre.
Organisers warned that federal and cantonal cuts threaten Switzerland’s standing as a scientific hub and could lead to higher tuition fees, restricting access to the privileged.
Similar actions also took place in Basel, Lucerne, Geneva, and Neuchâtel.
