The Swiss armed forces will be permitted to continue to take part in NATO exercises after the Council of States rejected a motion passed in the lower house calling for an end to the collaboration.
Members followed the advice of its own Security Policy Committee which recommended rejecting the motion.
The vote means the army can still take part in the exercises which it has been for the past few months, including a cyber warfare programme that included Ukraine.
A survey out over the summer showed that a small majority, 53%, would like to see closer links with NATO, although not actually join the organisation.
