Around 1,000 members of the Swiss Armed Forces are heading to Austria for joint military training alongside Austrian and German troops.
The exercise, which will take place over the coming weeks, includes the use of ground troops and tanks. The training area in Lower Austria offers conditions that Swiss training grounds are unable to replicate, making it a valuable opportunity for the participating forces.
However, the operation comes at a cost. Compared to a typical military exercise, the training in Austria is expected to cost an additional 3.8 million Swiss francs.
All deployments of Swiss military personnel abroad are voluntary.
