A mechanic from Schaffhausen has a New Year’s resolution – to break the world speed record for a car over half a mile – which is about 800 meters.
The current record is 420 kph.
Sandro Widmer took a reporter from the Blick newspaper to a German autobahn and showed how one car he built, his prototype, was able to accelerate from 0 to 200 kph in only three seconds.
If his record-breaking attempt is successful, he will be the first European to hold it.
The car will use 19 litres of fuel in 800 meters at full power – but it will be carbon neutral as it uses bioethanol.
Sandro says that’s not an effort to be green – bioethanol is just better, he says.
