Swiss Federal Railways CEO Vincent Ducrot has been placed under protection after receiving death threats linked to a major contract award.
The CHF 2bn deal went to German manufacturer Siemens instead of Switzerland’s Stadler - a decision that triggered a wave of anonymous messages accusing Ducrot of treason.
SBB confirms he’s required bodyguards for the last several days but won’t discuss details, saying high-profile roles can attract serious reactions.
The federal police office says protective measures are being handled by cantonal police forces. Meanwhile, the SBB and Stadler are trying to de-escalate tensions.
Stadler and SBB met on Thursday in hopes of calming the situation, with SBB insisting the tender was evaluated by around 100 specialists and clearly favored Siemens.
Stadler is still reviewing the decision and may pursue legal action.
